A morning in the Lab

Shadowy chevrons shoot through crystal clear salt
Inclusions emerge from the hazy abyss
Fluid inclusions, clear and square
Recrystallized inclusions in abstract shapes
and sediment-filled ones like so many cubes of dirt
trapped in the halite.
Cracks and bubbles, the frustrations to perfection
Discard half of what at first glance seemed good.
The humming of the scope's light offsets the pound and shatter of chisel on crystal
Bright lights blind
Magnifying glass bent
Razor blade with precision scrapes away sediment and debree.
A jewel is found
Perfectly square
Cleaned with dampness and made to shimmer
Almost better than a diamond the halite seems,
It's features apparent to the naked eye
Chevrons angle sharply telling of past formation,
Preservation.
No bubbles
No cracks
A perfect crystal.
Lights off,
Equipment put away
These are the images from one morning in the lab.
