Frederick Douglass/Abraham Lincoln Continued...

Image
We finished the story about Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass and we read a few more stories about these two great men. We also enjoyed a visit to our nation's capital to remember these men, and the legacy they leave behind. We enjoyed this story about Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. We learned that after Lincoln's death, Mary Todd Lincoln gave Douglass a walking stick from the president. Douglass moved to Washington D.C. years later to work for the United states Government. His home in D.C. (Anacostia) is now run by the National Parks Department, and is open for visitors. Since we were already planning a trip down to Ford's Theatre, and Lincoln Memorial, I decided we should see Frederick Douglass' home, Cedar Hill, as well.  In the visitor center at Cedar Hill the cane given by Mary Todd Lincoln to Frederick Douglass is on display. It was a lovely visit down to Washington D.C. Not only did we enjoy our histor...

Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass

Image
Last week we explored the relationship between Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. We did not finish the book, so this topic will bleed into next week for sure.  The book is very detailed. We enjoy this type of biography. The picture book biographies leave us with lots of questions and we end up googling for more information. This book begins with Frederick Douglass' bio and then gives Abraham Lincoln's bio. That's as far as we've read. Because of the title, we know that these two men are going to make friends at some point in the story. So far we have simply drawn some parallels between their life stories. We are on a bit of a summer schedule now. Still working on math addition facts and counting with Anastasia, but not doing proper math lessons. We are focusing on foreign language -Latin and Spanish-  in lieu of English/Language lessons. We are trying to learn a little piano, in lieu of Art appreciation and drawing lessons. And instead of proper science le...

Strawberry Picking

Image
The peppy Pickerings picked half a peck of Prout's ripe strawberries, If the peppy Pickerings picked half a peck of Prouts ripe strawberries, How many of Prout's ripe strawberries did the peppy Pickerings pick? We didn't count them ;) We have enjoyed eating them, however. This spring's weather has been perfect for strawberries, and we spent a lovely morning last week with friends, picking strawberries. The only downside, was that we got chased out by a turkey named Teddy. A "friendly" turkey. Gwen didn't think so! Fun times!

Two weeks...history

Image
The past two weeks we have focused on the Underground railroad and Abraham Lincoln for our units. I plan to continue learning about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil war this summer, and this was a nice way to begin the end of our school-year, though we still have a few weeks of work to log. The first week we read the story, An Apple for Harriet Tubman, by Glenette Tilley Turner. I appreciate that this picture book tells the true story. It has a happy ending, but it does not sugar coat Harriet's difficult childhood in slavery.  Every day we began our day pretending we were on a choo choo train, taking turns being the conductor. We tried to teach Gwen her shapes with a picture of a locomotive. The wheels are circles, smokestack, rectangle etc. Not sure anything is sinking in just yet. We also drew a step by step picture of a train for one of our art lessons. Tristan is working on his math facts. He was able to conquer the final minute drill of the year this week, and...
