Spring and a fun book review

Image
We spent a week learning about spring. Seasons are fun for all ages, and I feel blessed to live in a place that has all four seasons. The children have been suffering from spring allergies, otherwise, what a great season! We read many books about spring (see book list below). Some highlights from the week: In language Tristan made a list of characteristics of Spring. He also reviewed all of his poems that he worked so hard to memorize this school year. In Math, we worked on some Saxon math assessments and minute drills to finish up for the summer. Tristan still needs work on hammering his addition facts down. We counted flannel robin's eggs in a flannel graph nest with the girls. We are trying to incorporate Gwen into our morning. Teaching her to count in English, Spanish and French this week. Tristan and Ana worked on a spring collage for art, Tristan first took photographs on a nature walk  and once uploaded, he then copied them into a word document to make hi...

The Giraffe That Walked to Paris

Image
Two weeks ago we read The Giraffe That Walked to Paris , by Nancy Milton. We also read Zarafa, the giraffe that walked to the king, by Judith St. George. These two books tell the story of the giraffe that was given to France from Egypt. We really enjoyed these stories, and it was nice to compare the books. Essentially they tell the same story, though details differ slightly and the illustrations are very different. At the pre-k/k level, I've noticed how much the illustrations speak to the children. Adding so much to the story that is not in the text. Even Tristan gleans a lot of context from illustrations, and I enjoyed comparing these stories and hearing the children's opinions and take-away from each. Vocabulary- Stagecoach, Citizen, Impatient, patient. monocot, dicot. Tristan and I are also reviewing what we learned throughout the year in Language. This week we played with our sentence cubes. This is our last week of Saxon Math Lessons. In History/Geography we learn...

Two weeks of fun, and Anastasia is five!

Image
Last weekend Anastasia turned 5 years old! Yay! She is our big kindergartener now! She celebrated her birthday day with a morning t-ball game followed by a shared party at our home with her cousin (who is one day older). The two princesses had a blast together, and charmed us all as we celebrated their five years of life. We left the day after the party for a 5 day trip to Williamsburg, VA. We had a lovely time! The kids had fun and learned a LOT! We spent one day in Jamestown Settlement and the other days we visited Colonial Williamsburg, we even got to meet Benjamin Franklin one evening at our resort. I know the highlight of the trip for the children was spending time with Grandma and Grandpa. Williamsburg was so pretty this time of year. The flowering trees, buttercups, and beautiful gardens were all showing off for spring. The week before last we learned about gardening and measuring. We measured out a space for our garden. Didn't get the gr...
