Reigning King Jesus
The idea of Jesus as king is a recurring theme in our home. Tristan is fascinated by the idea of Jesus as the Mighty King! Of course, this is a common theme for praise and worship songs and so we have the conversation about Jesus as King often. Anytime he hears the word King, Tristan immediately chimes, Jesus is King!
Reading through the book of Judges, this phrase struck me. "In those days Israel had no king, so the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes." (Judges 17:6 NLT) This phrase, or a variation of this phrase is repeated throughout the last few chapters of the book. Of course, immediately following Judges, the poeple cry out to God for a king and the books of 1 and 2 Samuel are followed by 1 and 2 Kings. Having a king did not solve Israel's sin problem any better than the judges were able to, and by the end of 2 Kings, the people of Israel were in total slavery. I realized that Israel needed to acknowledge God as their King. He wants to reign supreme. He did at the time of the judges, He desired to lead Israel, and he finally gave them earthly kings to satisfy them and teach them a lesson, knowing that these men were going to fail and dissappoint. God alone wanted to be Israel's king. He sent Jesus, and the people missed him. They were looking for a "mighty king".
We know who is King! The Bible spells it all out for us. As I read Judges I realize that I am so gifted by this Word of God that spells out all of human history and all hope for all of humanities future. Yet, with all of this right in front of my face, I often live like the Israelites. I do whatever is right in my own eyes as if I had no king. But I have a King! An awesome one! The all powerful, creator of the universe who conquered hell and the grave! It's like I'm allowing myself to be enslaved for nothing. I usually criticize the Israelites pretty hard core, I mean, they messed up pretty badly, and they had so many amazing miracles of God and they were God's chosen people and blah, blah, really, I am the exact same!
I am so blessed by Tristan and his spiritual wonder. He doesn't even know what reign means, today he told me it meant little drops of water coming out of the sky and hitting you on the face. But you know what? It doesn't matter, because he is constantly remembering that Jesus is King and that is what I need to be doing., Every minute of every day, bowing my knee to the mighty King Jesus!
Here is my song of the week.
You thought of us before the world began to breathe
And you knew our names before we came to be
You saw the very day we'd fall away from you
And how desperately we need to be redeemed
Lord Jesus come lead us
We're desperate for your touch
[Chorus:]Oh Great and Mighty One,
with one desire we come
with one desire we come
That you would reign, that you would reign in us
We're offering up our lives, a living sacrifice
That you would reign, that you would reign in us
Spirit of the Living God fall fresh again
Come search our hearts and purify our lives
We need your perfect love
We need your discipline
We're lost unless you guide us with your light
We're lost unless you guide us with your light
Lord Jesus come lead us
We're desperate for your touch
