A Bargain For Frances
This week we were back to school and finishing the Frances Study Guide by Valerie Bendt. I am excited to return to the routine of Five in a Row, as much fun as the Frances stories have been.
A Bargain for Frances, by Russell Hoban tells the story of Frances getting cheated by her friend to purchase a used tea set, when she had saved to buy one new. She realizes she was cheated, and she tricks her friend into doing the right thing. The story ends well with friendship and forgiveness.
We spent a lot of time this week discussing tea. We talked about the word tea, and the family of words spelled with the -ea. Anastasia received a book, Little Bea and the Snowy Day, by Daniel Roode for Christmas and we were able to incorporate this story into our week.
We had a tea party one morning for snack. I baked vegan sweet potato cupcakes with marshmallow frosting and we made a few different flavors of loose-leaf tea. We flavored the raspberry quince with sugar and cream, we sweetened the chamomile with honey and left the cinnamon plum plain. The children tasted each flavor and decided they enjoy their tea with cream and sugar, just like Allen Say(Tea With Milk, Anastasia's favorite book this week). Then the children were able to decorate a tea set coloring page with loose-leaf tea.
We read a book about the Boston Tea party and talked about the difference between this historic event and our tea party with tea and cake. I was able to introduce the idea of economics and exported/imported goods, as well as review the beginning of our nation. We located Japan on our map and China. We talked about how the British would have gotten tea from China, and India. Then we talked about how tea would have reached America. The kids enjoyed drawing x's on our map locating the different countries, drawing a caravan across Asia and also a boat to cross the Atlantic.
Valerie Bendt included ideas to go along with this story and we put together the reading puzzle and the sentence sequence strips. We were also able to make a web diagram filling in descriptions of the used and new tea sets from the story. I was also able to review our previous lessons about telling time and counting money.
A nice week to complete the Frances series of stories.
