Miss Rumphius

Last week we read the story Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. This beautifully illustrated story tells the story of a life lived to it's full. The story begins when Alice Rumphius is quite young and continues through her many adventures of life. The story ends with a new beginning, as Miss Rumphius passes her wisdom on to the next generation.
Our vocabulary words this week: Chandler, Prow, Figurehead, Wharves. We learned about the Dewey Decimal system, and looked at the numbers on the books we had out of the library. We were excited to find a nice assortment of books in our "book bench".
For Math we learned about the bushel as a unit of measurement. We proceeded to calculate many different conversions between a bushel and other, more familiar, units of measure. A bushel is about 32 quarts, so from there we could find how many 2 quart pitchers would make a bushel, how many gallons, and how many pecks, etc.
In geography, we learned about all the geographical regions of the world, digging deeper into the jungle and the desert, and Maine. We reviewed Oceans of the world.
In Social Studies, we discussed -observed in the story- how things change over time: clothing styles, interior decorating, etc. We talked about Islamic architecture and where in the map it can be found. We looked into "the land of the Lotus Eaters" -a little taste of what is to come in literature. And we learned about Maine.
For science, we focused in on the Jungle habitat, Desert habitat, Lupines, Camels, and shells/animals that live in shells.
Art involved looking at the details in the illustrations, and making handprint hermit crabs with decorated shells.
Spanish lessons involved reading Rosemary Wells, Only You in both English and Spanish, Solo Tu.
Friday we enjoyed an outdoors field trip with other homeschool families to Camp Sankanac, a local Christian day camp. We learned some basic survival skills, shot bow and arrow for the first time and enjoyed a wild hay ride. We also enjoyed spending time with other homeschool friends.

Other stories we enjoyed this week:
L is for Lobster, Cynthia Furlong
Is a Camel a Mammal?  Tish Rabe
Ivan the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla, Katherine Applegate
