Caps for Sale
Last week we enjoyed the story Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobdokina.
This is a super fun story, the book cover says it all. We also enjoyed Circus Caps for Sale, by the same author.
Anastasia learned the letters I and J this week. She is beginning to show interest in writing and putting sounds together. I am excited about her progress!
Vocabulary for the story: peddler, refreshed, checked. We also reviewed position words, like up, down and behind. We hunted for those in the story.
For Science we learned about trees, so in Art appreciation we enjoyed the painting, Lighthouse Hill, by Edward Hopper. What struck me about this painting is the absence of trees. Tristan and Ana worked together to make a checkers game out of recycled material. We now play at least one game of checkers a day, and it's neat to see Tristan improve each game.
We learned about color and pattern. ROY G. BIV! We reviewed our colors in French and Spanish.
We also studied light and Monkeys in science, conducting experiments with color and light all week. I pretty much went through and conducted all of the experiments from The Science Book of Color, by Neil Ardley.
Our memory verse for the week was Psalm 119:105 Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Math included lessons from Saxon level 1 as well as Money Madness, by David Adler. This book is a great introduction into money and it's uses. We figured out how much money the peddler could make if he sold every cap (which he does in Circus Caps for Sale).
Last week it rained all week. We were able to get out on a nature walk collecting leaves and acorns/pinecones, but otherwise we were inside a lot. We read a lot of books!
Here are a few stand-outs:
Color, Gallimard Jeunesse
Crinkleroot's Guide to Knowing the Trees, Jim Arnosky
Tell Me, Tree, Gail Gibbons
Monkeys, Valerie Bodden
Planting a Rainbow, Louis Ehlert
The Adventures of Riley: Safari in South Africa, Amanda Lumri
Now that we've finished Peter Pan, we began Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson ( I love getting the classics on kindle for free!).
