Two weeks of fun, and Anastasia is five!

Last weekend Anastasia turned 5 years old! Yay! She is our big kindergartener now! She celebrated her birthday day with a morning t-ball game followed by a shared party at our home with her cousin (who is one day older). The two princesses had a blast together, and charmed us all as we celebrated their five years of life.

We left the day after the party for a 5 day trip to Williamsburg, VA. We had a lovely time! The kids had fun and learned a LOT! We spent one day in Jamestown Settlement and the other days we visited Colonial Williamsburg, we even got to meet Benjamin Franklin one evening at our resort. I know the highlight of the trip for the children was spending time with Grandma and Grandpa. Williamsburg was so pretty this time of year. The flowering trees, buttercups, and beautiful gardens were all showing off for spring.

The week before last we learned about gardening and measuring. We measured out a space for our garden. Didn't get the grass dug out of it yet, but we'll get there:)
We sketched woody and grassy plants in our landscape.
We have been growing caterpillars and ladybugs all month. Our butterflies were released at Anastasia's party. (ladybugs didn't do so well:(

We also tried to get a little more organized. I feel that as the school year elapsed this spring we have gotten into some bad habits. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off as we begin our school week tomorrow.
Some habits we worked on...
Beginning our day with Bible. (I am going through a Kay Arthur Study with Tristan. He is actually looking up scripture and reading from the Bible. We also worked on our memorization each day. This is so important, and such an easy thing to let slide.)
Reading lessons with Ana. (To help me remember this I made a dry erase check-list for each child's daily tasks. It helped me remember Ana's reading lessons, and it helped Tristan stay on task without needing frequent reminders.)
Latin/Math/Geography review games. Keeping sharp on the things we already covered.
Circle time activities that include Gwen. This is a big one! I've let circle time become "math meeting" time, and I've been leaving out the cute songs, finger rhymes and interactive flannel graph that I did with Tristan and Ana when they were preschoolers. Gwen needs this, and I have to be able to meet her where she is at.

Hopefully some of this inspired you. I am excited to begin a new week! Praying for God's grace and strength to lead my children to Him, and pass along to them the joy of learning.

Books we read on plants/measuring:
Length, Peter Patilla
Trees, Weeds, and Vegetables- So Many Kinds of Plants, Mary Dodson Wade
A Seed is Sleepy, Dianna Hutts Aston
Seeds, George Shannon
A Place for Butterflies, Melissa Stewart
We finished Heidi, by Johanna Spyri (The children LOVED this story. It is really inspirational and sweet.)
