Family Read Alouds

We filled our spring break with lots of reading. Alone Yet Not Alone by Tracy Leininger Craven is the true story of two Pennsylvania girls who were taken by Native Americans during the French and Indian war. I will not give away the ending, but this is a wonderful story of faith and courage.  In this story one of the captured girls remembered the scripture verses that she had memorized as a young girl, even after living with the Native Americans for nine years. and losing the ability to understand German, her native language.  I am reminded of the command found in Deuteronomy 4:9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them

My fourth grade son is reading G. A. Henty's With Wolfe in Canada aloud. G. A. Henty's books are written for young men and can be violent; all of us listen to this book. We are enjoying it, though there have been a few times that I wonder if the girls needed to hear that.
My second grader is reading Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. This book is so fun! It is far-fetched but super cute!
It is really good for the kids to read aloud. It allows me to complete other tasks while they are reading, and everyone can enjoy the story. Also, I am able to hear what words they struggle to read, and address any vocabulary questions in the appropriate context.
I am reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White for my kindergartener. This is such a timeless classic! Never gets old...Neither does reading aloud as a family!!!
