Reading with a critical eye

Incase my last few posts haven't clued you in, I love to read! One thing that has been happening a lot the last few years is my tendency to find errors in the books I read. I'll find sentences missing a period or a quotation mark. Slight mispellings are common, or words typed in twice. Some of these little misprints crack me up. To see the word "the" spelled "teh" makes me giggle a little and, I know the editor's intention was to catch all of those little mistakes before publication; it's really no big deal. I enjoy catching the little typo's in books, and I try to read with a critical eye. Jason asks me how many typo's I found whenever I finish a book. I am currently reading Love Powered Parenting, by Tom and Chaundel Holladay and this week, I found a misprint that made me really upset. I even e-mailed the publishing company. In one of the Bible stories retold in the book, there is an inaccurate statement. Not a controversial statement, a statement that is just wrong and disagrees with the scriptural account of the story. In the discussion group we are attending for this book, I brought up my concern and  another guy in the group also, found the inaccuracy. I was encouraged that I am not the only one reading with a critical eye. Some others agreed that the story seemed forced and extrapolated, full of opinion, but they did not recognize the untruth published in the book. Most of the time when I find typo's it is just silly, but in this situation, it was a serious offence. When it comes to matters of Biblical integrity, we all should be reading with alert minds and hearts, testing the truth of the "Bible based" literature that is bombarding our Christian book stores and church libraries. I am not saying that the Holladay's intended to rewrite scripture, I hope it was a silly oversight, like so many others I find in books. All I am saying is, I will continue to read with a critical eye!
