How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World

Last week we read, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman. This book is silly and fun with such a great fall theme. We all enjoyed reading this story each day. Monday we  began the week talking about Salt. How it is harvested and used. We began a little pot of salt water to set in the sun and watch the salt fall out as the water evaporated. We colored a NaCl poster and talked about salt being a compound of minerals. Sodium is a mineral that our body needs a little bit of, but not too much. It is truly amazing that God gave salt the ability to make food taste better when used a little bit, but if you use too much it is disgusting. Our bodies need just a little sodium for proper function. God is truly amazing and as we sat down for circle time and Bible reading to start our day Monday, the passage for the day was Matthew 5. You are the salt of the earth. If the salt loses it's flavor, how can it be made salty again? I am totally blown away by God and how he wants to speak into our lives and be applicable and integral to everything we do!
Tuesday morning we visited Highland Orchards for morning story time and apple picking.  Being out in the orchard really excited us and we picked many different types of apples, trying to maximize the varieties that bake well and adding in a few just for eating. Tristan wanted as many different varieties in our pie as we could get. Granny Smith, Stayman, Jonathan, Mutsu, and Gold Rush. We picked some Enterprise and Red delicious for eating. Enterprise is my new favorite apple, but I have to say, Red delicious picked fresh taste very sweet minus the mealy texture that the grocery store variety usually have. We ate so many apples Tuesday. I guess if an apple a day keeps the doctor away we each must have eaten a week's worth of apples. They were amazing! This trip sort-of fueled our activities for the rest of the week. We baked our apple pie using the recipe from the back of Marjorie Priceman's book. It tasted great. Each bite had a character all it's own since we used so many different apples. We did some apple stamping. This week was also heavy on geography as we tracked the journey around the world, and we discussed where different foods originate and how they make their way into our grocery stores. We investigated different spices, most of which smell terrible, and we made spice art using spices instead of glitter. We also did some experimenting with water, clean and salty, to see the difference in the buoyancy of different household items. The only thing we noticed a difference was in a raw egg. In clean tap water, the egg layed flat and rolled around the bottom of the bowl. In salt water, the egg stood up on the bottom of the bowl! This week really packed a fun punch enjoy the pictures.
