Katy and the Big Snow

Last week we read Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton. The story is cute, although we enjoy Mike Mulligan more. This is a good winter story and it introduces some different elements, like map skills, that worked for our school week. We played up the maps and talked about the compass rose, N, S, E, W and also memorized our new address. I incorporated some activity sheets from the book Map Skills Made Fun by Catherine M. Tanblyn. We reviewed the seasons and learned them in French and Spanish. Focusing this week on Winter. We got a very timely snowstorm on Tuesday and we were able to measure how much snow we got outside both on the ground and in drifts as well as marking on our wall inside the heights of snow depth mentioned in the book. We practiced cutting skills by making paper snowflakes and we also made frost on the outside of an aluminum can. We got to visit with Cousins and family for an extended weekend. This cut our school week down to 3 days, but they were fun and the children enjoyed measuring, cutting, and playing outside in the snow!
