School and Spring Holiday

I failed to blog about our last two weeks of school, and the Easter holiday that fell right in the middle. We read Make Way For Ducklings, by Robert McCloskey and The Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf. I'll begin with Make Way for Ducklings.
Robert McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings is a true classic. The children love this story, children have loved this story since it's original printing in 1942.
Our vocabulary words this week were about ducks, Molt, Incubate.
For Math we practiced simple multiplication and division. If all eight ducklings need to eat two snails for lunch, how many snails are eaten? If it takes 28 days for a duck egg to hatch, and a week has 7 days, how many weeks does a duck incubate? Etc.
For Social Studies and Geography we learned about Boston and looked for clues to the past in the story's illustrations.
Science was all about ducks.
Art mostly involved studying McCloskey's pictures, learning about the lithographic process and attempting to draw water.  We spent 3 days learning about mallard ducks and Boston and then we took the weekend off for Easter.
Thurs-Friday we spent down in the D.C. area with one side of the family and then Easter Sunday we spent at home in PA with the other side. In addition to the traditional family dinner and Easter Egg hunt, while in Washington D.C. we also enjoyed touring the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. What a neat place! We loved the artwork on display by Dustin Yellin, Tristan enjoyed all of the flags in the entryway and I loved seeing the lounges and theatres.
Dustin Yellin's amazing mixed media 3 dimensional collages.

The Israel lounge ceiling. Depicting many different Bible stories.
I made Anastasia and her doll matching Easter dresses, the pink shoes were purchased to match.

The week after Easter we read The Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf. Similar to Leaf's story about the Scottish boy, Wee Gillis, this story is about how to be a peacemaker. The children really enjoyed the story line and humor in this one. We read it in English and in Spanish.
Vocabulary this week: Butt, Lonesome, Banderilleros, Picadores, Matador.
Math this week became about the Fibonacci sequence. We learned all the numbers contained on our 100 number chart and how to find them. The idea came from the website, http://bedtimemath.org/fun-math-fibonacci-flowers/. This one seemed to fit in with our story, since Ferdinand loved to sit and smell the flowers.
Social Studies/Geography was all about Spain and the Bullfight. We even enjoyed 3 different Spanish dishes for dinner. The kids were not big fans of the Gazpacho, Garlic Shrimp and Polenta or the Chicken Paella. Oh well. I enjoyed the leftover Gazpacho as a dip for tortilla chips. Yum!
For Science we learned about the Cork Oak tree and Bulls and Vultures.
For Art we looked for humor in the pictures, symbolism (Ferdinand always has his back to Madrid and the fighting) and also we looked to see how Lawson made things appear far away. The children enjoyed making paper sunflowers as well. Their only instructions were to give their sunflower a Fibonacci number of petals.
