Henry and Mudge: The First Book/ Not a baby anymore!
Last week we read the story Henry and Mudge: The First Book, by Cynthia Ryalnt. These Henry and Mudge, and Henry and Mudge and Annie stories are favorites of ours. It was really nice to read a story that Tristan could read aloud each day (at least a few chapters a day:).
Our vocabulary words this week: Tornadoes, drooled, almost, different.
For Math we learned about different measurements. The story mentions how tall Mudge grew, and how much he weighed. We talked about liquid units of measure, volume. How to measure weight and inches, centimeters, (linear measurements). We read a series of books by Marcie Aboff to help us understand these different types of measurement, If you were a quart or a liter, If you were a pound or a kilogram, If you were an inch or a centimeter, and we practiced measuring liquids. We also took our height measurements and stood on the scale to see how much less we weighed than Mudge!
In Geography and Social Studies: we learned another state and capital adding to our map skills, and we discussed childhood fears. Are these fears valid, or unfounded. What can we do to address the fear? Nightlights, for example, are a simple solution to a child's fear of the dark. We memorized the verse in 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love, perfect love casts out all fear. We talked again about dreams and one morning the children dictated their dreams to me and then they drew pictures.
In science we learned about tornadoes. We also did a little scent experiment. I blindfolded the children and then had them smell the scents mentioned in the book: lemon, chocolate, soap, and milk. We also learned about texture.
For art appreciation we studied Black Square, by Kassimer Malevich. We also did some abstract art work using instruction from Drawing with Children, Mona Brooks. The children also enjoyed potato stamping birthday cards for Gwen and their cousin Brayden.
Friday was Gwendolyn's 2nd Birthday. We took the day off school, and Jason took the day off work. We all visited the Catoctin Zoo and then proceeded to Nana and Poppi's house for a weekend visit and birthday celebration for Gwendolyn. She is so grown up!
Other stories we enjoyed:
Spikey, Slimey, Smooth, What is Texture? Jane Brockett
Thunder Cake, Patricia Polocco
The Lightlings, R.C. Sproul
George in the Dark, Madeline Valentine
Tornadoes, Gail Gibbons
Henry and Mudge: In the Green Time, Cynthia Rylant
Henry and Mudge: The Best Day of All, Cynthia Rylant
The Children of Noisy Village, Astrid Lindgren
