Madeline

We are back to Five-in-a-Row. Love it! I'm starting Anastasia on pre-k, getting her amped up for Kindergarten. She had a great week learning with us, and remembered her vocabulary words from Madeline on Friday when we reviewed. I can tell that she feels special, getting to put vocabulary words in her folder, and making some of the crafts that she remembers Tristan making.
It was fun for Tristan as well to revisit an old classic and learn some new things, as I adapted the unit on Madeline for First Grade as well.
Yes, our story this week was Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans. The classic story about 12 young girls who lived in Paris. They did everything in two straight lines. They were all very obedient easy to forget, all except Madeline.
Vocabulary words from Madeline (for Anastasia): Appendix, Solemn, Disaster. Tristan made an illustrated word diagram about France.
History/Geography: We located France and Paris on the map. Anastasia colored the flag of France and we read a few books about Paris. We also learned about the Eiffel Tower. So interesting. I was excited to learn that the engineer, the tower's namesake, was the same man who designed the scaffolding for Lady Liberty. I also began reading Laffayette, by Arthur M. Sclesinger, Jr. Tristan looked at a few of the pictures in the book with me and we had a little conversation about Lafayette and George Washington. Then we looked on the internet to see a picture of the Chateau where Lafayette was born. It is owned by an American and open to the public as a museum. Tristan and I decided that if we ever go to France we want to go to the Chateau de Chavaniac in Auverne.
In science we learned about staying healthy, getting your appendix out, and the digestive system.  I utilized a few printables from Choose My plate and our new mantra is: Make half your plate fruits, or vegetables at every meal. https://edit.staging.choosemyplate.gov/printable-materials
We learned/reviewed our seasons and months of the year in English and French.
For Art appreciation we looked at the painting Lillies by the Bank, by Claude Monet, and we completed a few exercises in Drawing with Children.

Books we enjoyed this week:
The Digestive System, Ben Morrison (great book, loved the images that showed the appendix so clearly and addressed the appendix in the text.)
Let's Exercise, Alice B. McGinty
Eating Right, Alice B. McGinty
Let's Talk About When You Have Your Appendix Out, Melanie Ann Apel
Festive Foods! France, Sylvia Goulding (lots of great recipes with information about the geography and food products in France. We loved the Salad Nicoise.)
Let's Visit France, Susie Brooks
Bella and Harry, Let's Visit Paris!, Lisa Manzione (I did not enjoy this story, but the children asked me to read it again and again.)
A Walk in Paris, Salvatore Rubbino (I enjoyed this story much more than his A Walk In New York)
Gustave Eiffel's Spectacualar Idea: The Eiffel Tower, Sharon Katz Cooper
Eiffel Tower, Now That's Big!, Katie Riggs
