Papa Piccolo

This week we read the story Papa Piccolo, by Carol Talley. A colorful story about a Venetian tomcat who is adopted by two stray kittens. We enjoy this story, and with all the illustrations it is a rich story about Venice, Italy.

Anastasia's vocabulary words: Situation, Chimed, Regatta, Skiff, Scow, Barge Gondola. Tristan completed the final lesson in First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind, Level 1, by Jesse Wise Bauer.
We are having a difficult time jumping back into a good math routine together, since taking a week off due to sickness, yes even homeschoolers take sick days! Anyway, the Saxon Math lessons have remained consistent and Tristan enjoys them. I attempt to challenge Ana in mathematics a little each day, but nothing specific to this story.
We learned tons about Venice this week in history and geography. Ana colored a picture of the flag of Italy, and we looked at the flag of Venice each day. Tristan and I began reading a new book about Pennsylvania, and we enjoyed looking through a book about Pennsylvania's historic covered bridges, it was just photographs. The topic of covered bridges came up last week while we were sick. We read the story Lentil by Robert McCloskey. Illustrated on the inside cover is a drawing of the town of Alto, Ohio with a covered bridge. Venice is also known for it's bridges. Anyway, a nice transitional topic to learn about. We hope to visit a couple of covered bridges we saw in the book, including the covered bridge in Perkasie when we go to Grandma's house for Easter.
In Science we learned about domestic cats and eyesight. We performed some basic experiments about peripheral vision and how our eyes perceive objects in motion. We also did some gardening, cleaning up our flower beds. Tristan was so excited when we pulled up the dead butterfly bush remains from last year and found new growth coming up already! I love to see the children making these discoveries for themselves.
In art we water colored. There is a beautiful picture of Venice on the inside cover of Papa Piccolo and we attempted to paint that picture. We also did some milk art, in honor of the domestic cat. The children colored coloring pages of a cat and kitten. It's crazy how much my children love to color! We also listened to the four seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, and a musical drama, Vivaldi's Ring of Mystery: A tale of Venice and Violins. I was amazed to learn that Antonio Vivaldi was a Venetian. The music brings tears to my eyes. I guess I'm emotional due to pregnancy, but the four seasons are special pieces of music, and the drama in the Ring of Mystery is very good.
