Grandfather's Journey

I'm a few weeks behind here on the blog. I guess blogging is one of the first things to go when life gets busy (that and cleaning the toilets, yikes!). Well, This morning I am blogging instead of cleaning; I hope that time for cleaning will come later in the day.
Three weeks ago we found ourselves back in Japan. Our story was Grandfather's Journey, by Allen Say. I really love Allen Say's books and this one is excellent. Say is really telling his own story with this book; he starts at the very beginning.

We did not have vocabulary words for this one. We looked for the imagery used to tell the story. We looked for simile and Tristan wrote his own simile about the rain. Tristan and I continue with Language Lessons and Anastasia is learning to print her letters.
Math lessons this week consisted of Saxon Level 2 for Tristan and Bedtime math with both Tristan and Ana.
This story is done in beautiful water color, and we love to watercolor. So we painted pictures of little songbirds in a cage, and other things. We also practiced folding birds in origami. This was too difficult for Anastasia at first, but when she realized I was not going to fold hers, she was able to complete the folds.
In science class, we learned about birds.
This week was heavy with History/Geography/Social Studies. We found Japan on map and tracked Grandfather's Journey across the map to California, and then eastward across the United States. We learned about kimono's. We learned about Pearl Harbor, and the sinking of the Titanic. I did not have the forethought to request books about the bombing of Japan, but there are a few good children's books out on the subject. We learned about the continents and also about the different geological regions in the world (mountains, desert, farmland, etc.).

Other stories we enjoyed this week:
The Seven Continents, Will Mara
K is for Kabuki: A Japan Alphabet, Gloria Whelen and Jenny Nolan
Counting the Continents, Ellen K. Mitten
Fine Feathered Friends, Tish Rabe
Bamboo Hats and Rice Cake, Ann Topert
Earth, David Bennett
Roger Peterson's ABC of Birds, Linda Westervelt
Mama Built a little Nest, Jennifer Ward
Suki's Kimono, Chieri Uegaki
Story of the Titanic, Steve Noon
Music for Alice, Allen Say
Pearl Harbor, Tamara Britton
