Adam and His Kin
Last week we began Kindergarten properly and amped up some of our 2nd grade subjects. I am using the 6 week Frances Study Guide by Valerie Bendt for these first weeks. It is a lot less prep than 5 in a Row.
We read Bedtime for Frances, by Lillian Hoban this week and enjoyed the story sequence strips, alphabet puzzle and poetry moment. Ana also learned about the clock, how to tell time to the hour. We compared and contrasted Bedtime for Frances and Goodnight Moon Margaret Wise Brown, and she learned about moths and badgers.
I began reading Adam and His Kin by Ruth Beechick to Tristan for history. He narrates what he remembers to me. I am also using the Draw and Write Through History: Creation to Jonah. This counts as History, handwriting- cursive- and Art. I love activities that span multiple subjects.
We are learning about Earth in Science. It has been great this week to hear the Biblical account of Earth's beginning in History class and then to jump into science and learn about Earth's composition, atmosphere and place in space. We conducted one experiment: a simple sundial. We used a volleyball net pole for our gnomon and watched it all morning. Our observations: the shadow moved, the shadow got shorter, a little after 11:30 am, the shadow pointed North.
I began Prima Latina this week. Lesson 1 mostly reviewed what we already learned in Song School Latin, 1 but "Oremus: Let us pray", was new. I'm excited about this program!
We are moving forward with Saxon Math and First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind.
It was a great week despite having our new addition and the many interruptions that go along:)
We are so blessed and happy that our newest little member finally arrived.
Other Books we enjoyed this week:
Earth, Our Planet in Space, Seymour Simon
World Book Encyclopedia: Earth, A Picture Reference
Earth, Fradin
Earth,Derek Zobel
Sarah Whicher's Story, Elizabeth Yates (Recommended by a friend. An enjoyable faith building story)
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis
