Wild Horses of Sweetbriar

This week I began Five in a Row properly with Anastasia. We spent the week on, The Wild Horses of Sweetbriar, by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock. This is such a beautiful story. The illustrations pair well with the rich text. (I am so excited to be back to the old lesson plans! Definitely we are not doing as much as I did with Tristan, however, Ana is benefiting from his second grade lessons as well. I love the home-learning environment.)

We learned about horses- obviously- flora and fauna, Nantucket, seasons review, simile and metaphor and emotions. We counted horses by tens, and splatter painted. With Ana learning needs to be active and hands-on. We were making simile together while changing her sheets, "the sheets float to the bed like leaves fall from the trees" etc. She has a shorter attention span for books. This is an area I need adjustment. I have had such a "books" emphasis because of Tristan's love of literature. Ana loves to play and do! She also enjoys listening in on Tristan's lessons.
Tristan began listening to his history lessons on CD. The Story of the World, Volume 1, Susan Wise Bauer, read by Jim Weiss. This is really nice for me, because I have 5-10 minutes of time where I am "off" and the children all love it. What a novelty! Tristan still narrates what he has learned and I write down his narrations.

This week in Geography we began labeling Ancient Africa using the Map Trek by Terri Johnson curriculum.
We read the story, Seeker of Knowledge, The Man Who Deciphered Egyptian Hieroglyphs, James Rumford. The kids enjoyed this story, and we followed it up with writing our names using hieroglyphs.
We learned about Deserts in science.
Tristan learned about Simile and Metaphor in addition to his language lessons. He is beginning to get into diagraming sentences. It is a tough shift, from reciting the definition of a noun, to actually identifying a noun in a sentence. It's good, though. As an adult, of course, I see the value of teaching grammar, and I'm excited that our Latin curriculum has a heavy grammar emphasis.
Tristan also enjoyed splatter painting.
This week was gorgeous! We spent a lot of time out of doors. We got a little behind on Latin, but it was worth it!!!

Exceptional stories we read that are not listed above:
Madaket Millie, Frances Ward Weller ("Where life has set you, make a difference.")
Comet's Nine Lives, Jan Brett
Desert, Ron Hirschi
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, C.S. Lewis
