Loving History and Writing
Last week began with the Monday holiday, so we had a short week. It was still productive. Gwendolyn learned C is for Cookie.
Anastasia loves math! We focused on Language and reading last week.
Tristan conducted quite a few experiments about eggs using the suggestions from Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day, Fulbright. The jr. Journal is exceptional! We are loving the mini books, coloring sheets and copy work that are part of each chapter.
We completed the biography of St. Augustine. I enjoyed learning about Augustine, and the children enjoy most stories that I read aloud. This book went along with our history of the end of the Roman Empire.
We are working our way into the early middle ages and will read a fun story next. Stay posted!
This week Gwen is learning the letter D. D is for Dog and Dinosaur.
Anastasia's book of the week: Amelia Bedelia's First Library Card, by Herman Parish.

Ana got her first library card and will check out her own books at our own town library.
This story introduces the idea of town. We learned to map our town. Anastasia is also learning the state capitals. This week she learned the Capital of NY: Albany.
She learned about the circulatory system. Just like books go out and come back to the library, blood cells cycle through our bodies, powered by the heart. She made blood in a cup- red kidney beans=red blood cells, tapioca pearls=white blood cells, rice=platelets and water=plasma. Fun and hopefully memorable.
In language, Ana is learning the difference between a common and proper noun.
This year Tristan is working through Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind, Level 3, by Susan Wise Bauer. He also started working through Medieval History - Based Writing Lessons in Structure, Style, Grammar and Vocabulary, by Lori Verstegen.
This is an amazing book! The target age is 4-6th grade, but there are stage 2 sections of each lesson for older students. This book challenges Tristan. I do not expect to complete every lesson, however, I feel it is helping Tristan immensely in writing and he needs the challenge.
