Field trips and the Last Days of Summer

The weather feels like summer! We have had the warmest start to fall here since 1970 - according to the weather people on my local radio station. We enjoyed the first day of fall at the pool. That's what I love about homeschool. I'm a seize the day kind of person.
We are still getting our lessons done, and we have had a few fun field trips. Due to my aversion getting out in cold weather (even museums bum me out, because there I am with five coats in my arms. Aaagh!!!). I prefer piling all the fun into the time when the weather accommodates.
Last week we visited John James Audubon's home in Audubon, PA. The home is called Mill Grove. This field trip fit into our study of birds in science, and Anastasia's study of Pennsylvania history. It was a nice little afternoon trip.
John James Audubon is known for his paintings and documentation of birds. He is the first person to tagbirds. He made some monumental discoveries about bird habits, migration, nesting, etc. through observation. He is known country-wide, and his name is still associated with zoos and bird societies today.
The house at Mill grove is a gorgeous old house. The floors upstairs are original to the time when J. J. A lived in the house. His bedroom set up as recorded by his brother,. It is cluttered with eggs, nests, taxidermy animals and things he found in the forest. He would use these things to illustrate his beautiful paintings. Outside the house, the property has many trails and places to view nature. They also keep a few owls. The Great Horned Owl was trying to make friends. He was very vocal. We all loved it!

We also spent a day in Cape May, NJ enjoying the bird and Monarch migration. It was a whirlwind day, but so worthwhile. Next time we go, we will spend a few days. The Zoo is lovely and free, birding with Cape May Bird Observatory is so fun and supposedly the bushes turn orange as Monarchs cover the leaves to rest overnight. Wow!
