Wonderful Wordplay and the Days of the Week Too

This week we read two picture books that I love!
Friday my Radio Flyer Flew, by Zachary Pullen uses alliteration brilliantly. The story progresses through one week in the character's life, beginning with Saturday's search all the way to Friday's flight. The verbs begin with the same letter as the day of the week. This book entertained my two year old, and I used it to talk to my fourth grader about quality verbs. Pullen also uses time words that begin with the same letter as the day of the week, example: Twilight on Tuesday. I had to read this book again, immediately after I finished the first reading. The children all sat enraptured through both readings. The illustrations are as interesting as the text.
Friday My Radio Flyer Flew A Christmas Tree for Pyn, by Olivier Dunrea is a sweet story. The Christmas tree tradition brings healing to a grieving father and daughter. There is one part of the story where they sort of pray to the tree. That was weird, but otherwise we really enjoyed the story. I enjoyed how the decorations are all collected treasures from nature. Super sweet ending. This is quite a step up from the "Dick and Jane" style Gossie and Gertie stories, (as beloved as those are in our home).
