Amelia Earhart and other High Flying Adventures
To kick off summer, we have enjoyed a fun unit study about Amelia Earhart. We have read almost every children's book our library system has on this enigmatic lady. We also visited Pitcairn air museum at the Willow Grove air field, Willow Grove, PA,where Amelia flew to new heights in an Autogiro.
Some of the fun books we've enjoyed are:
Amelia and Eleanor Go For A Ride, by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This story began the whole unit for us. A friend at my homeschool group recommended it and we were off! I did not know about Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt's friendship and this book tells the story well.

Sky Pioneer, by Corinne Szabo is a simple introduction to Amelia's life and accomplishments and the end of her story, as we know it.
When Amelia Earhart Built a Roller Coaster, by Mark Weakland is a super fun story that includes fun details about Amelia's childhood.
Night Flight: Amelia Earhart Crosses the Atlantic, by Robert Burleigh tells the story of Amelia's famous solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
Of course, we always enjoy David Adler's biographical picture books, A Picture Book of Amelia Earhart by David Adler proved no exception.
The Last Grand Adventure, by Rebecca Behrens is a fictional chapter book about Amelia's sister Muriel and Muriel's grandmother in the 1960's. I am not as fond of this book as the others, but the children are enjoying the story, and we have discussed that it is fictional.
Anastasia is reading the American Girls Series, you can imagine her excitement when she found Amelia Earhart mentioned in the Kit's Christmas book! I love when those little connections are made.
Wings of Freedom Air Museum located in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania made for a super fun day-out for me and the kids. The Museum has interesting artifacts and pictures about Amelia Earhart, but it is mostly a museum about military aviation. There are display cases representing each war that used airplanes. There is a M.A.S.H. helicopter on display inside and lots of fun airplanes and helicopters outside as well. Thanks to my Dad for recommending this museum. The museum is reasonably priced for admission. The kids all got a little foam glider on the way out the door. We spent the remainder of the afternoon at Peace Valley Park watching the gliders take air!
To add to the fun, our family attended the WW2 Event and air show held at Reading Regional Airport with some friends last weekend. This event was an immersive reenactment and historical airshow about WW2. I learned so much, and enjoyed seeing these antique airplanes fly daringly through the perfect blue skies. It was such a neat experience for our family.
