Summer education!

Whoever said summer school was lame, never tried it at my house... JK! It was tough getting the kids back into routine after our road-trip. Last week for T week, we didn't really do anything except a coloring paper of a big letter T. I also got a movie on sea turtles, which is amazing! (Turtle: The Incredible Journey).
This week, Tristan began swimming lessons at the YMCA and we learned about the letter V.

I thought V week would be a dud, but I was so wrong! We began with Van and moved onto Vegetables, Vultures, and Volcanoes! Cool stuff! And the cutest toilet paper vultures you ever saw. We planted our Pea seedlings outdoors (a few of them are gone. Eaten by a bunny, I guess).
We did a volcano experiment, a must-do kid experiment. The kids wanted to do it again! Please and again! I told them it would come back around,  just give it a few years. I love seeing the kids get excited about science:) Our book of the week is Volcanoes Nature's Incredible Fireworks  by David L. Harrison. We own Harrison's 1973 edition of Piggy Wiglet and The Great Adventure, a wonderful whimsical story, so when I saw his name on this title, I was a bit surprised. Not only because it was recent, 2002, but also because it is a non-fiction book. Turns out he is just as good as telling a true story as he is making one up. The text is simple enough for my young kids, but informative about volcanoes. I used it as the introduction to our experiment today, trying to explain what happens in real volcanoes versus what was happening in ours. Not sure if it made sense the kiddos. Oh well, they are interested in Volcanoes now, and that is a huge step from the beginning of the week, when the word meant, nothing!
