Review of the Alphabet
The past week and a half we reviewed the alphabet. Tristan is doing pretty well identifying the letters and their sounds and hopefully some of what we are talking about is sinking in with Anastasia. At least she is getting more confident with the alphabet song.
There are so many great books out there that highlight the alphabet. We have Curious George learns the Alphabet, by H.A. Rey and Dr. Seuss's ABC an Amazing Alphabet book. From the library we got a few that we really enjoyed. the hidden alphabet, by Laura Vaccaro Seeger. A creative lift the flap book that uses intuition and shape to hint at the various letters of the alphabet; The Racecar Alphabet, by Brian Floca. A rip roaring, rhyming walk through racecars and the history of racing. There were also a few books that we didn't enjoy as much. Appaloosa Zebra A Horse Lover's Alphabet, by Jesse Haas and Margot Apple disappointed, even with their exceptional use of the letter X. The pictures and text fell rather flat and The Victory Garden Alphabet Book, one of a long list of alphabet books by Jerry Pallotta did not engage the way I had hoped.
Anyway, we did a few alphabet themed activities: tracing letters and looking at things around the house that began with different letters. We played a game out on the pavement where I put out some letters in sidewalk chalk, and when I called the letter, they had to hit that letter with splash balls. This game can also be done using water balloons. Super fun. (Thanks to a creative mom here in Col Spgs for the idea.)
Then we had special company in town for the better part of a week and that will be my next blog. The alphabet was reinforced during many car trips with Mom-mom and Pop-pop while Mom-mom and Tristan played alphabet I-Spy. Now I have to pull myself together and figure out what to learn about next. (I'm thinking numbers and shapes and basic math/counting skills.) I'll keep you posted.
