A Baby Sister for Frances
This week we read the story A Baby Sister For Frances, by Russell Hoban. The illustrations in this book were done by Lillian Hoban. This is a funny story about Frances dealing with a new baby in the home. We have been dealing with this very scenario for the past year, and I think my two could relate to Frances' feelings of neglect, though I'm pretty sure they've never thought of running away! They enjoyed reading about Frances pretending to run away, and again her bedtime antics. They also enjoyed the ways this story referred back to Bedtime for Frances, reminding me how much Frances likes piggy back rides to bed.
We were able to introduce some new vocabulary this week - knapsack, cozy, allowance - and also work on our reading. These books with dialogue between characters lend themselves well to shared reading. By week's end, I encouraged Tristan to read the Father's lines. This was a good challenge for him. Anastasia helped me finish Frances' lines. She seems to have a very good memory, and I'm encouraged by how she's progressed in the past few weeks in her interest in letters and words.
For Language- We compared Marc Brown's story Arthur's Baby with A Baby Sister For Frances. I wrote down the children's dictated stories about a new baby. We also focused on adjectives- words that describe a person place or a thing. We shook gravel, and other things in a can and described the sounds we heard. Coming up with descriptive words was difficult for them, but they had no problem picking adjectives out of a sentence.
For Math- I begin to teach Tristan how to count money. We didn't get too far, and I'm realizing we will be working on this for a while. I think he at least remembers how much each coin and dollar is worth now. Anyway, we did some simple addition with money (the scenario from the book about allowance.) As I said, we will continue to work on this in the weeks to come.
For Social Studies- we talked about family and forgiveness. We read Three Bears in a Boat by David Soman. We talked about how God designed our family special and we are each unique. I shared with the kids the meaning of their names.
We used a marble covered in paint to create artwork this week. I have had this idea for a while. Since I buy coffee by the bag, we never have used coffee cans, but I used a yogurt container instead and the artwork still looks amazing! Oh and how we love to paint!
These next few weeks are bunched with birthdays, Nana's on Monday, Cousin Brayden's Saturday and Gwen's next week, so for Spanish we read the book Feliz Cumpleanos, by Mary Risk. The beginning of the book had good tips on how to read this book and help the kids with their language skills. I have some other birthday related books in English and Spanish, but we just read this one every day this week.
We kind-of skipped science this week, unless you count baking a chocolate cake together!
Tristan checked, Make it Work! Dinosaurs, by Andrew Haslam from the library and he wants to do every activity. This week he made the Ankylosaurus out of cardboard. He was very diligent wanting to get this done by the end of the week. It is amazing and he is so proud of it! Gwendolyn likes the knobby tail.
