Great Counting!
If you've followed the blog for any amount of time, you know about my love, slight obsession, with alphabet books. I've had a more difficult time finding good counting books, that is until a few weeks ago. I mentioned to a friend this void for counting/math related books and then, boom! I had a bench full of them. I wanted to share my favorites on the blog. There are seven that really impress me.
1) I've already mentioned Cinquenta en la Cebra, by Nancy Maria Grande Tabor. This great book counts to fifty and also challenges vocabulary on so many levels! Great one!
2) Another book that counts to fifty; super fun and unexpected, The Long Line, by Tomoko Ohmura.
3) How Many Mice, Michael Garland. This awesome book only counts to ten, but teaches one to one relationship along with addition and subtraction. It includes the math in an action packed adventure story.
4) How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamarra is not a counting book per se. It is a story that incorporates math. Namely estimation and multiplication also problem solving and grouping.
5) The Baker's Dozen, by Dan Andreason. I've mentioned this one as well, but it is super cute, counting to 13. It's always fun to find a counting book that counts beyond ten, and Anastasia adores this book! Yum!
6) This First Thanksgiving Day: A Counting Story, by Laura Krauss Melmed. This story surprised me. It counts to 12 and sneaks in history. Names and events are woven into the rhyming text.
7) Last but not least, Nancy White Carlstrom's Jesse Bear. Let's Count it out Jesse Bear, is just straightforward; counts to 20. The rhyming text is accompanied by realistic illustrations. Love it!
Matthew 7:7 says that if you ask it will be given to you. I guess all I had to do was voice my need and before I knew what was happening, my void was filled. I am realizing more and more that we have so many amazing (and free!) resources in this country for learning and teaching our children. A little persistence, (sometimes networking) and a lot of patience are making homeschooling an exciting journey!
