All Those Secrets of the World
Last week we read the story All Those Secrets of the World by Jane Yolen. This is a sweet window into how children understand and deal with life. Neat that the story is about Jane Yolen, and even my children caught onto that fact by the second or third reading.
Our vocabulary words for this week: Jimmies, Horizon, Perch, Sycamore. We discussed who is telling the story, and identified the use of personal pronouns. We also found the foreshadowing in the story. The children were excited to find it, like they discovered something special.
For math we learned how to add two. Two plus any odd number gives and odd number and even plus two gives even. (If Janie was 4 when Daddy left and 6 when he returned, how long was Daddy away?)We also learned how to subtract dates, and figured out that all three of them are two years apart in age.
Our geography lessons included finding the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, and placing our story disk there. We learned about bays around the world, and what makes a bay. We also discussed the location of WW11 in Europe and where Janie's Daddy sailed.
For science we learned about the Chesapeake Bay habitat and also learned about the impacts of pollution (oil) on aquatic habitats. We learned about the Exxon Valdez oil spill and it's effects on the habitat and the recovery. Tristan was upset that Orca pod AT1 has not recovered (http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/oil-and-chemical-spills/significant-incidents/exxon-valdez-oil-spill/timeline-ecological-recovery-infographic.html). We performed some experiments with oil and water recommended by National Geographic to see how oil can be effectively cleaned out of water.
We also learned about how the earth is round. We did some experiments recommended in the book How We Learned the Earth is Round, by Patricia Lauber.
For art, we painted with watercolors. We reviewed drawing water and practiced and also we found the shadows in the illustrations. We also listened to "Over There" and some other military music that featured the band.
Tristan also finished his season of T-ball last week. What a fun time! It is beginning to feel like summer, however. We are excited to put some time in review and take a break from formal "school" for the summer.
Other Stories we enjoyed last week:
Grandad' Bill's Song, Jane Yolen
Meet Chadwick and His Chesapeake Bay Friends, Priscilla Cummings
Oil Spill!, Melvin Berger
Spill!, Terry Carr
