Review Week/ Harold and The Purple Crayon
Last week, our last week of school we put in some review and we went out to pick red raspberries and strawberries.
We read Harold and His Friends: A Harold and The Purple Crayon Treasury, adapted from the television series by Valerie Garfield.
Then each day of the week, after reading one of the stories, we would review.
For language we reviewed all of our vocabulary words learned this spring. It is astonishing how much Tristan remembered, especially with simply a picture prompt. We also reviewed our personal pronouns, metaphor/simile, and onomatopoeia.
For Math we reviewed time, dates, adding subtracting, measuring and patterning.
For Science we reviewed the moon and stars.
For Geography we took the story disk from all the books we read this semester and placed them where they belong on the map. We also re-read The Ultimate Interactive Atlas of the World.
For Social Studies we reviewed each story and what we could learn from them.
We didn't really do much for Art last week, except the children sketched a little while we were out at the strawberry fields.
We have been studying Honor in our Bible time together and we had our last week of "Honor Club" last week as well. It's nice to finish these things off, amazing the satisfied feeling of closing the book.
I am looking forward to moving on.
This summer we plan to continue phonics lessons every day (I really recommend Alpha Phonics by Samuel L. Blumenfield for a systematic approach. I am also using McGuffey's First New Eclectic Reader) and reading with the children (I am going to focus our reading on some of the founding fathers) .
We will also continue doing Bible time together in the mornings, though I am cutting out hymn singing every day. It is kind-of difficult for them since they cannot read the words and are unfamiliar with the songs.
And Swim lessons!
Learning really doesn't stop during the 12 weeks of summer; I'll keep you posted!
Other Books We Enjoyed Last Week:
Owen and Mzee, Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff and Dr. Paula Kahumbu
The King Without A Shadow, R.C. Sproul
Find The Constellations, H. A. Rey
The Moon Book, Gail Gibbons
The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame
I am going to try to get photos of Strawberry picking posted soon!
