Doug Unplugged
Last week our literature book was Doug Unplugged by Dan Yaccarino. In this little story, a robot boy experiences the city after unplugging from the database and getting outside to explore.
We learned about emotions/feelings, pigeons and Pennsylvania's big cities.
Anastasia added the letters C and D to her repertoire.
Tristan is still enjoying Saxon Math, and it is really much nicer for me to follow a structured program instead of making up lessons for each day (though this story provided some opportunity to explore big numbers, computer coding, pattern making, etc).
In Science we learned about pigeons and emotions/feelings.
In Social Studies and Geography we learned about Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh as the important cities in Pennsylvania. Then we talked about some of the smaller cities around the state. We began reading the book City by David Macaulay.
I am really enjoying Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind, by Jessie Wise. In addition to these lessons our vocabulary words from Doug Unplugged were, Download, Teeming, Skyscraper, and Manhole.
For Art we enjoyed studying Vincent Van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night, as well as continuing lessons inspired by Drawing with Children. This week we learned about shape families, how to see everyday items as part of those families, and we practiced drawing using the dot, circle, and line families. We also made a fun cut-out city-scape inspired by the illustrations in Doug Unplugged.
We have not really jumped into our Bible lessons for the school-year. We are still finishing our wisdom search through Proverbs on Love from the summer. We have started learning a new hymn each week and we begin our day with singing.
All in all we are having fun together and always learning! Looking forward to another great week!
Other books enjoyed last week:
F is for Feelings, Goldie Millar
Feelings, Nuria Roca
Pidgeon Poop!, Elizabeth Baguley
Adventures of Riley: Tigers in Terai, Amanda Lumry
Henry and Mudge and Annie's Perfect Pet, Cynthia Rylant
Amelia Bedelia Hits the Trail, Herman Parish
