Harry The Dirty Dog
Harry the Dirty Dog, by Gene Zion provided the stimulus for last weeks school work. The children enjoy this story, and we also enjoyed reading Harry and the Lady Next Door, also by Gene Zion.
Anastasia worked through the letters G and H.
Our memory verse for the week: Psalm 51:10.
Vocabulary for Harry the Dirty Dog: Chute, Suddenly, Following and Soundly. We also began memorizing a new poem and continued to learn about Nouns in Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind level 1 by Jessie Wise.
In Geography/Social Studies we learned the state capital of New Jersey, and the two letter abbreviation for New Jersey. We also talked about jobs around town and what one could be when they grow up.
We are still learning about Pennsylvania history. This week we read about the flag of PA and the state symbols. The state motto: Virtue, Liberty and Independence served as Tristan's copy work for the week.
Science this week involved healthy habits. Bathing, brushing teeth, playing hard, eating well, getting enough sleep, etc. This led into a teeth brushing experiment involving hard boiled eggs soaked in different beverages to see which beverages are worse for your teeth. The children brushed the eggs with Nana, so I only saw the outcome, but they learned that it takes more than one swipe of the toothbrush to get all of the egg (tooth) clean. (inspired by:

We built our Spanish vocabulary by reading Habitos Saludables, by Rebecca Weber. Anastasia is especially quick with learning things in Spanish. By day four of reading the section headings, she could tell me in English what I read in Spanish.
Tristan continues to enjoy lessons in Saxon Math Level 1. Last week the lessons began to include apples and seasonal counting activities. Super nice that it all works into what we are doing in other subjects. Ana is counting higher each week.
In art appreciation we viewed the painting Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez. We also practiced drawing bats (inspiration from Ranger Rick Jr. magazine October 2015).
We took another little outing to an apple orchard this week. This time we went with some friends and enjoyed not only the orchard, but also the historic town of Hopewell Furnace. The children all enjoyed seeing the free range chickens and the two big bulls as well as hand feeding grass to the white Percheron horse. Fall is such a magical time of year!
Our Co-op is going well. Tristan is Learning Latin using the Song school Latin curriculum, as well as learning about the Plymouth Colony. His favorite part of Co-op, however, has been the hour spent outside for gym class. Hopefully the weather continues to cooperate on Thursdays for the children to enjoy their group sport time outdoors. Anastasia is learning through literature with a class inspired by FIAR (yay for Five in a Row!!!), she is also enjoying gym class and an introductory music class. So fun to learn with other Christ following families choosing to homeschool.
Other stories we enjoyed this week:
The Berenstain Bears and Jobs Around Town, Stan and Jan Berenstain
Richard Scarry's Busy Workers, Richard Scarry
Adventures of Riley Safari in South Africa, Amanda Lumri
Annie and Snowball and the Grandma Night, Cynthia Rylant.
