A week at the beach and then Back to School!
Two weeks ago, we were treated to a vacation in Virginia beach with family! Great times with cousins, grandparents. Quality time with my little sister, doesn't get much better. Ash and I made a killer sandcastle, not sure who was watching the 5 children during the hours it took us to construct it... I think Nana had it covered... Anyway, we had a fun time. The Virginia beach aquarium is great, we loved family biking on the strip (at least I did), and who can beat Kohrs brothers ice cream? We enjoyed (safely) soaking up lots of sunshine in preparation for the soon approaching Fall.
Speaking of Fall, we are back to school! Yay for first grade! We are having a blast and I'm excited to share about what we are learning.
Tristan got a library card this week and now checks out books for himself!
We also made Hummingbird cupcakes together. Yummy and also tied into our story!
Our story for the week was Amelia Bedelia's First Library Card, by Herman Parish. Although I am very partial to the original Amelia Bedelia stories, this is a cute book and we enjoyed reading it. Amelia Bedelia is as literal as ever and gets into such big trouble, despite the fact that she is only in elementary school.
Anastasia's letters for the week were A and B. She enjoyed her special letter crafts and tracing pages.
Our Vocabulary words were: Town, Librarian, Circulation and Fine. In language lessons we learned about nouns.
For Science we played off of the word circulation and learned about the circulatory system. Each day we had a hands-on activity and then in the afternoon while the girls napped, Tristan and I read through The Circulatory System by Conrad Storad. Friday we took a nature walk.

In History/Geography we are learning about where we live. We mapped our neighborhood on Monday. That was an enjoyable hour and a half walk. We were blessed with perfect weather! Tuesday we learned about Douglassville, found it on the map of Pennsylvania and also read about the history. I was interested to learn that Douglassville was the first settlement in Berks County. Wednesday we talked about Berks County and one of its more famous residents, Daniel Boone. We read a short biography about him. Thursday we looked at a farm map of Berks county and we visited our local farm stand for fresh corn on the cob for dinner! Friday we took our nature walk at Daniel Boone Homestead and enjoyed the pond wildlife and fresh air. We also read a few short stories from Journey Through our Land, by W. Edmund Claussen. This book of short stories is a real gem from the library!
Tristan and I are enjoying Saxon Math level 1 for math lessons. We include Anastasia in the morning math meetings then we complete the lesson and homework together after lunch.
This week for art appreciation we looked at Washington Crossing the Delaware, by Emanuel Leutze. Then we began working through the first lesson of Drawing with Children. We really only completed the level 1 and 2 assessments, learned how to relax and then got to know our markers through scribbling. Then Friday we sketched nature. I'm excited to learn how to draw... with my children! I'll keep you posted.
