Some Hits and a Few Misses
We have enjoyed some really lovely picture books recently, and in my attempt to read every alphabet book in print to Gwendolyn, we've come across a miss, or two. I thought I'd blog about the good and the bad. Here we go...
A wonderful picture book about the life of mathematician Paul Erdos, The Boy Who Loved Math: The Improbable life of Paul Erdos, Deborah Heiligman. We enjoyed being introduced to Paul Erdos.

The Underwater Alphabet Book, Jerry Pallotta and Eating the Alphabet Fruits & Vegetables from A to Z, by Louis Ehlert are both excellent alphabet books!

I do not recommend A B C A Family Alphabet Book, by Bobbie Combs. This story involves families with two mommies and two daddies on most of the pages. My children asked me how families can have two mommies. I tried to explain to them some ways kids can have two mommies including parents who get remarried, etc, but these are not the kinds of topics I feel my 4 year old needs to process as she learns the alphabet.
Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed the World, by Paul L. Maier is a great book about the famous church reformer from the middle ages in Germany. (Not to be confused with the famous social reformer from the 1960's in America.) As a read-aloud, I could hardly finish this book because I got so emotional. We are so blessed to have God's word printed in our language, accessible to every person. We have Martin Luther as well as other reformers of the middle ages to thank for that.
Along the same vein, we have enjoyed a few stories by Louise A. Vernon, one about John Wycliffe, The Beggar's Bible, Ink on His Fingers, about Johann Gutenberg.
