Pre-School Progress

I am working through pre-school for the third time now, and I still haven't figured it all out! I love a challenge! My four year old has proved to challenge me this year. She turns five next month. Technically too young for Kindergarten, right? But she's over naps, and wants to learn, so here we go! Last year we worked our way through the alphabet, and she loved the crafts and alphabet stories. I did not see a lot of progress made in her ability to sit and focus, or on her ability to recognize letters. These things have improved greatly this year, and I think that it is partly due to her age, and partly due to a great curriculum loaned me by my super sister: All About Reading from All About Learning Press. This program, combined with a "layed back" Five in a Row schedule is producing results in Little Ms. Preschooler's comprehension, attention span and cognitive skills.
We use the most basic form of the curriculum. We have already completed alphabet worksheets galore last year, so this year I am simply using the poems, and pre-reading exercises offered in the book. We sit for 10 minutes a day and then we read together. As I said earlier, I am starting to see results!
I also mentioned a "layed back" Five in a Row schedule for her. She had a really difficult time with the Five in a Row format at first. She didn't want to read the same book every day for five days, she struggled to narrate the stories back, and did not want to participate in some of the activities that accompanied the stories. I have kept trying with the different book units, spending two weeks on one story and just doing Five in a Row two or three times per week, and she is catching on and beginning to enjoy it.
This week we are reading Daniel's Duck, by Clyde Robert Bulla. She was able to answer comprehension questions about the story after the first reading. Progress! She still told me that she doesn't like this story, but I'm okay with that.

I am still finding fun alphabet books. I believe I always will be searching for the next great alphabet book! It's like my thing. Anyway, this one by Brian Wildsmith is super fun! The Amazing Animal Alphabet
