Once Acre Fund
I just finished reading The Last Hunger Season by Roger Thurow, not to be confused with the recent Hunger games series. This book is a documentary that highlights the work of One Acre Fund, an NGO working with smallholder farmers in Africa to end hunger. I've always known there are children starving around the world, it's a classic American line that Moms use to get their children to clean their plate, but I've never had a good understanding of why children are starving much less an idea that this could be prevented without a complete government overhaul. Thurow tells the story of smallholder farmers in western Kenya. He marries his reporting background with colorful storytelling making the book an easy read. And despite the topic of the book (hunger) he tells a story of hope and change. The wealth distribution around the globe is not likely to change overnight, but there are farmers in Africa who are breaking the poverty cycle through the support of this organization. I would reccommend the book. Though I did not agree with all of the opinions represented by Thurow, I enjoyed learning about the farmers in Kenya and One Acre Fund.
